This website includes bibliographical information on extant missionary publications in Chinese from the early nineteenth century to 1844, when the proselytization of Christianity and related publication activities were strictly forbidden by the rulers of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Mostly printed in Southeast Asia, these texts were produced during the initial phase of Western expansion in the East. The missionaries used them not only for religious influence but also for the dissemination of information. They spread these texts among overseas Chinese communities and smuggled them to the southeastern coastal areas of China to distribute among sailors, merchants, and students taking the Civil Service Examination. The printing formats of these texts exhibit great variety, including single sheets, pamphlets, tracts, and multi-volume books. Taken together, they demonstrate that the missionaries employed experimental and innovative ways to introduce an unfamiliar religion and a distinct worldview to the nineteenth-century Chinese masses.
